how to cure your work frustration
I worked on projects where my frustration was growing day by day. I felt like I was alone vs every possible technical issue ever. Finally, my last resort was asking others for help, and then magic happened - the impossible was resolved.
That’s how I learned to ask for help in the first place, not in the last.
courage
Asking for help is hard because you first need to admit that you don’t know. You need the courage to do so, and that’s why it is an essential part of the process.
You have the power not only to make your life easier but also to impact the whole team. If you admit your not-knowing it’s easier for others to admit their not-knowing. And the virtuous cycle begins.
ask quickly
Usually, if I can’t find an answer in 30 minutes, any more effort trying to do so will only create a negative spiral of frustration.
Try asking for help as soon as you realize you are stuck.
Of course, you might solve the challenge before someone answers, but It’s still a win-win. You can share the answer and help others with the same issue in the future.
ask publicly
Work (and life) are not a competition. It’s not about who knows-it-all and does-it-all. It’s about synergy.
Your team has a beautifully wide range of skills, and it would be a shame not to use them!
Try asking for help where most people can see it. It gives the highest chance of getting an answer quickly and allows folks to share their expertise.
You might be surprised who has an answer for you ;)
I challenge you, the next time you find yourself in a rut - don’t wait, ask right away.
