A year ago, I had no idea what coaching was and didn’t think it was something I could try.
For the past months, I have had 1:1 and group coaching sessions and suddenly, the world around me started shifting. I changed, and along with me, all that I do, see, say and think.
my definition of coaching
You know best what the situation you’re in is, what is blocking you, and what you want out of it. That’s why you are the best person to come up with a solution.
The trick is to uncover it all, and here’s where coaching comes in!
Coaching, for me, is the art of listening, synthesising information and asking powerful questions. It’s a way to explore what you already have inside.
Thanks to it, I have learned superpowers that have profound impact on my life.
superpower #1 - uncovering limiting beliefs
Coaching helped me to question everything I thought was true about myself. My first questioning focused on introversion.
Introvert was a label I've put next to my name my whole life. I’ve never really evaluated it, never asked, ‘is this really how I feel’ ?
I realised it wasn’t only a label but a limiting belief. I noticed I was saying ‘no’ to opportunities to meet new people or give a presentation or join speed mentoring just because I thought this is what introvert does.
Now when opportunities appear, I no longer default to what I think I am supposed to say. Instead, I welcome them and listen to my intuition to make the decision that resonates with me.
superpower #2 - assigning meaning
The most powerful coaching experience I had, was just a day after I heard the news that I needed urgent knee surgery. Which meant cancelling my travel plans, being on crutches for 6 weeks and a long recovery.
After a session with my extraordinary coach Jesse, I realised that I have the power to assign meaning to events in my life — with no exception to this one.
It was up to me to say, ‘this is the worst'‘ or ‘this is the best’. And I chose the latter.
I started asking — how could this be the most amazing thing ever happening to me?
Now when I look back, I see it was a pivotal moment in my life. I realised I don’t need nor want to be a victim of the unexpected anymore. I want to harness its power and ride its wave.
For me coaching’s been and still is a thrilling journey within. It empowered me to work, live and be better.
If you are wondering if coaching is worth trying — don’t. Try it and see for yourself.
